Mechi is divided into four districts:
- Ilam District
- Jhapa District
- Panchthar District
- Taplejung District
The 14 Zones of Nepal
From East to West:
1. Mechi Zone
- named for the Mechi River
2. Koshi Zone
- named for the Koshi River
3. Sagarmatha Zone
- named for Sagarmatha (Mount Everest)
4. Janakpur Zone
- named for its capital city
5. Bagmati Zone
- named for the Bagmati River
6. Narayani Zone
- named for the Narayani (lower Gandaki) River
7. Gandaki Zone
- named for the Gandaki River
8. Lumbini Zone
- named for Lumbini, a pilgrimage site, birth place of Gautama Buddha
9. Dhawalagiri Zone
- named for Dhaulagiri mountain
10. Rapti Zone
- named for the West Rapti River
11. Karnali Zone
- named for the Karnali River
12. Bheri Zone
- named for the Bheri River
13. Seti Zone
- named for the Seti River
14. Mahakali Zone
- named for the Mahakali River
